Computing is the top source of new wages in the United States, but there is a huge gap between the number of open computer science jobs and the number of computer science graduates. As a way to expand the opportunities brought forth by the Hour of Code that takes place each December, the EASD Coding Contest was introduced during the 2015–2016 school year. Students from every grade level and every building in EASD, including high school students who served as volunteers and judges, participated in this unique learning experience. With new computer science courses offered at Ephrata High School and Middle School combined with a 1:1 program to supply technology to students in grades 5-12, students have increased access and resources to expand the impact of computer science. The Coding Contest provides even more opportunities to collaborate and program while learning the skills they need for a rapidly changing world.

Over 300 District students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 participated in the inaugural Ephrata Area School District Code Contest. Students worked in small groups to create projects that demonstrate the use of code. Their projects were presented to parents, District staff, and the community in March 2016.
